Mikey, my Siberian Husky
This page about my dog Mikey, who passed away on January 18 is dedicated to all the readers and friends out there who love animals.
"Mikey" is pronounced like the name "Mike" with an "ee" at the end.
Mikey lived approximately 8 years.
His breed lives a few more years than that so he had a fairly long life.
Mikey had a tumor that we discovered when it had already spread to the vena cava (I have no idea how to spell that) blood vessel. We were going to try surgery, but rapidly he lost just about all platelets and his blood count was almost nil too. I am sure he would not have lived through the day anyway, but it was best to have him put to sleep when he was that sick, and that is what I did. 12 years ago, I learned a lesson the hard way when another dog who was like my child, died at home instead of being put to sleep, and it would have been better for her to avoid being in that pain. So since then I have known better.
There is so much the we all really don't know about dogs - how to deal with them, and what's best for them. The general public, including me, does not really know enough. It must drive veterinarians crazy. If I'd seen the signs, maybe we could have gotten the tumor out a long time ago before it was too late. Pet owners go through this heartache all the time. My veterinarian said there was nothing that could have been done but of course we all can't help but wonder (and I also wonder if she said that to be kind to me when I was blaming myself - and I appreciate the kindness too). So here's to our beloved animals!
Letters to the Veterinarians
My letters to the Veterinarians who cared for Mikey:
Dear Dr. M.,
Thank you so much for the many hours you gave to helping my dog Mikey. You helped him do better in his last days. All your recommendations were excellent, too.
It wa so nice of you to check up on us later on, too, after you got the news. I greatly appreciate your love and concern for Mikey. Sincerely....
Dear Dr. H.,
Thank you so much for the time and concern you showed at such a tough time. Mikey was in excellent hands with you. It was so kind of you to send a card to us, too!
You truly helped and the world is a better place because of you.
Sincerely, Mikey's family
P.S. I just received a note in the mail about your donation to the Veterinary Foundation in memory of Mikey. What a beautiful thing to do! I really can't remember when I have met such caring people as you and Dr. M. and Dr. B. Thank you so much.
Mimi, "Mikey's mom"
Dear Dr. B.,
Thank you so much for your help and sensitivity during Mikey's last 2 days and when he was put to sleep. Thanks to you and your staff, the sad event went 100% as well as possible. I'm grateful to you for that. I also truly appreciated the kindness and respect that Mikey received even after it was over and I was leaving. I could see that everyone cared and that his body would be treated with love and dignity. I'd never been there before or known about animal specialists.
Your kindness will always be remembered.
Sincerely,
Mimi, Mikey's "mom"
Emails from Readers
Mimi, ....In regards, to Mikey, I had a dog for 14 years that grew up with me & I loved him dearly. It's been 14 years since his passing & I still think fondly of him :-) I wish the best for you & Mikey. Kind regards, Lisa
My condolences on your loss. I have a sick cat myself and we don't know how long he has. Take care and God Bless. A.
Hi Mimi, He is beautiful. I am sooooooooo sorry! Best to you and your Family! Colleen
Good morning Mimi...take heart darlin' alllll our pets come rushing to meet us again when we get to Heaven! That's why they call it Heaven! ~Maureen
Mimi, Oh my God, this made me cry. I feel so bad for you. It is horrible losing a pet. But you should know that he knew he was loved and what greater gift is that? Animals have a much higher sense of everything then we do as humans because they aren't full of BS. I wish I could have told you about the specialists sooner. My thoughts are with you. Grieve how you need to but you know it has to come out. Again, I'm sorry. God Bless! Jo Ann
I am sorry to hear Mikey had to be put to sleep. He was so pretty, and so is your other dog. I love animals and babies and they love me. I am taking a break from boyfriends now. I could care less. I have not yet met the one, I suppose. Dianne
Mimi, You should know, dear, that Mikey is now playing in the beautiful meadow with lots of puppies, and kitties, all healed, and well, and happy, and, one day, he will look up, cock his head, and, bark happily, as he will hear YOUR voice, he will know that it is You, come to heaven, to be with him, and the others! Just wait, you'll see! Love you, dear, Lori
Mimi....I was so sorry to hear about your dog....I too have a Siberian Huskey. I saved her off I-20 interstate one day going to Wal-Mart! She is 3 yrs old...I've had her 2 yrs. She had heart worms so bad I thought I'd have to put her down but she & I weathered the storm with the shots & the humane sociaty spaded her for me... I named her Miss Highway...she looks alot like your dog Mikey. If you ever consider getting another Siberian... please call me...I might be willing to give her to you....I bought a house, work long hours and at times not able to give her the attention she needs....I would love for her to have a good family to love her & make her happy. Thank you.... M.
Dear M., I was honestly tempted to take you up on this offer, but I think we should just have Harvey be an "only dog" now. He's calmed down a lot since he's not always "in Mikey's face" - but he does miss Mikey! Thank you for thinking of it. -- Mimi
Hi Mimi, I just want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you. Micky was very luck to have you. Best Regards, Melissa
I am really sorry about your loss. I hope that you will be fine. You are such a strong person that I know. I admire you lot. From B. K.
Mimi, I am sending this for you and Mikey. This is where Mikey went after he passed away. I cry every time I read it, it is so touching. Thank you each day for your email, I really enjoy it. In Love and Light, Cherry
Dear Mimi, My heart goes to you and to your daughters for your loss. Mikey looks and sounds like a great dog. Here is a little music to help soothe your grieving heart. I know only too well how you much feel. Our pets are part of our family. I have a dog and three cats ~all girls~ and have been through this twice in the past. The two cats I lost will remain in my heart for ever. At the time, I made for them the same choice you did yesterday as I couldn't stand to see them in pain either. A kind American woman gave me the address of the following link: Rainbow Bridge Poem which opens on a beautiful text which I found very comforting. I hope it helps you and your family. I'm also thinking of Harvey who must miss his companion. Time is a great healer. Take heart and take care. Sincerely, Charlotte
Dear Mimi, I am sorry to hear about Mikey's passing away..its sad when we have to lose a dear one. I will pray to God for you..also for Mikey. He will give you the strength to bear this loss. Take care, M.
Mimi: I share your feeling over your loss of Mikey. animals are our other souls and losing a friend is like losing a apart of our selves. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Please know that your e-mails have helped me and I appreciate you. Thank you and again I feel for you, Barbara, Guardian of 4 horses, 1 dog and one parrot.
Hi Mimi, I just had to write in because of your story with Mikey. I'm so so sorry to hear he has gone away from you; I'm sure that his memory will bring you nice thoughts forever though. That is wonderful..... : - ) I feel very happy that you still have Harvey, who just looks like the sweetest thing on earth. And your daughter looks very nice, too of course! I know all about what I should be doing, or at least for the most part. I find it terribly difficult not to make all the mistakes in the book(s), ONCE my heart has opened up to a man. ... : - ) I love your e-notes; thanks so much for your support! Jennifer
Mimi, I just went to the web site to see the photos of Mikey. OMG! What a beautiful dog and what a wonderful story of how you "saved" him and gave him a wonderful life full of freedom and love. He is just gorgeous! Those eyes are mesmerizing. I missed most of the story of his illness. I am so glad he came into your life and his ending to his life was much happier than it would have been if he would have stayed where he was. Barbara
Mimi, I have added you, your family including Harvey to my prayer list. I too love animals and assist with an annual animal blessing at our church, Center For Spiritual Living. Mikey was so blessed to be with you and your family and now he is flying with all the animals who have passed over. The rainbow bridge is a wonderful web site you might visit. I so enjoy your emails, I am happily married for the second time, raiser breeder dogs for Canine Companions for Independence. I have black labs, currently male breeders. I know you have many emails but I do want you to know that I pass on your wonderful emails to my friends in relationships. Take care. Blessings, S.
Hi Mimi Tanner, I enjoy most all of the e-mails that you send out; they're helpful and inspiring. I read about your dog, Mikey and wanted to send my condolences. I visited the pictures on his site/your site for him, and he was really cute! I had to put my dog Bubba to sleep over 1 1/2 years ago and I still miss him; he was MY dog for over 12 years...got him after my divorce and he was my best friend while I raised 2 girls. I know it hurts, but it does get easier day by day. Take care, M.
Hi Mimi, My thoughts go to you quite often. Recently I put down my beloved Bubbie (huge fun loving rotweiller). I missed him so much that I felt I could not cope. I buried him in my front yard and slept in my swag under the tree next to his grave for a couple of nights. Then I found myself saying ' I love you Bubbie ' each time I passed his grave. Just saying those words had a tremendous peaceful effect on me. Thank you for the information you share with me. I agree with you - inner happiness is the very essence of life. I practise a thousand times a day being in the moment and not dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. Thank you, S.
Hi mimi, my most heartfelt condolonces on your loss. i saw the pictures, he had the most beautiful eyes. Please be strong for the rest of your family and especially the other pets. im pretty sure they feel the loss too and will be seeking comfort and assurance from you. be there for them. I pray that God gives you special attention through this time... Love L.
Dear Ms. Mimi, I'm one of the hundreds or thousands fans that gets your "callingmen" emails. This is the first time for me to write to you. And I have read about what you and your family have been going though with your "Mikey". Just wanted to let you know that I have hope and thought of good thoughts for a good strong recovery for your "mikey". However, even when we have done all we can do its not enought but at lease we know we try. My family have done the same thing with our cat "Pixie" just before the last Thanksgiving. She was a 10 years long hair Siamese cat also with "Blue eyes" very lovable always wanted to be combed. LOL... it should with all those hair.. LOL. She developed a breathing problem and the vet didn't know for sure if the surgery in her nose or throat would help since it was in a very sensitive area. And she could die since she would be under and don't know if she would gets her air. We didn't want to put her through that so the only compassion thing to do was to "put her to sleep" However, I wasn't able to be with her passing due to work.
By the time I got home I was already crying since I knew I wasn't going to see her then. Have a good cry. Miss her some days. Mom thinks that would be the last of the pet we will have since mom is getting up in the years and not wanting to be tie down with another pet if she just wanted to get up and go for a few days. Which that understandable and fine with me .....For now. Anyway, I just wanted to send you and your family my deepest sympathy on your loss. Beautiful dog "Mikey," love the pictures. Take each day as best as you can. God will take care of the rest. your fan, K.
I lost both of my pups 3 years ago and I'm not over it still and doubt ever will be. I am so sorry to hear about Mikey. They are like our children. Usually better behaved also. I enjoy your emails tremendously and they are full of motivation, insight and value. Keep up the good work. Adopt another puppy, it will make your heart soar. Donna
Dear Mimi, You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Paula in Canada
Mimi, so sorry to hear about Mikey. He is certainly in a better place, as I told my grandson when our dog Diamond passed, "He's in Doggy Heaven". Take care and Be Blessed. I.
Dear Mimi, I am sending you lots of smiles and hugs....I hope you and your family are taking each day at a day.... Thank you for sending out those e-mails faithfully. I know it must be hard.. Penny
DEAR MIMI, I WAS SO SAD TO HEAR ABOUT MICKEY AND SURE THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE HIM IN YOUR HEART....! I HAVE A 16 YEAR OLD DOG THATI FOUND IN TUSCANY, ITALY, WHEN SHE WAS 2 MONTHS OLD AND I AM SO USED TO HAVING HER AROUND THAT WHEN MY SON KEEPS HER AT HIS HOUSE I FEEL LOST WITHOUT HER!
DEAR MIMI, I JUST OPENED YOUR EMAIL AND READ THAT YOUR DOG HAD DIED. I AM SOO SORRY!!! I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE FEELING!! A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, MY DOG NONI DIED. SHE GOT SICK, SO I TOOK HER TO THE VET. HER BELLY WAS HUGE! SO WE THOUGHT SHE WAS PREGNANT, BUT THEY DID AN X-RAY, AND SAW NOTHING BUT A WHITE MASS. I KNOW SHE WAS PREGNANT THOUGH! I FELT THEM MOVING A COUPLE OF TIMES. THE DOCTOR SAID THE MASS COULD SIMPLY BE COVERING THE PUPPIES SO WE COULD NOT SEE THEM. SHE WAS AT THE VET ALL DAY, AND THEN THEY CALLED ME AND SAID SHE COULD SPEND THE NIGHT THERE, OR I COULD TAKE HER HOME AND BRING HER BACK IN THE MORNING. I KNEW SHE WOULD BE LOTS MORE COMFORTABLE IN FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS, SO I BROUGHT HER HOME. ONE OF THE SMARTEST MOVES I'VE MADE IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!!! SHE WAS MY SHADOW. SHE WAS NEVER MORE THAN 5 FEET FROM ME! EVEN WHEN WE TOOK HER TO THE DOG PARK TO PLAY WITH OTHER DOGS I SAT ON A BENCH AND INSTEAD OF RUNNING AND PLAYING, SHE SAT DOWN RIGHT BESIDE ME!!! THE WHOLE TIME! I WAS SOO FRANTIC THE NIGHT SHE WAS SCREAMING IN PAIN (I EVEN HAD THE DR GIVE HER SOME PAIN MEDS SO SHE WOULDN'T HURT. HE EITHER LIED AND DIDN'T OR FORGOT TO GIVE IT TO HER, OR IT JUST WASN'T ENOUGH) MY HUSBAND WAS CALLING FOR A 24HR VET AND I CRAWLED TO HER, LEANED DOWN RIGHT BY HER EAR AND SAID "IT'S OK NONI, YOU KNOW MAMA LOVES YOU SOOO MUCH AND YOU ARE SUCH A GOOD GIRL!!!" ABOUT 5 SECONDS AFTER I SAID THAT SHE STOPPED BREATHING. IT WAS LIKE SHE WAS WAITING FOR ME TO SAY THAT BEFORE SHE COULD GO. THE CLOSEST 24HR VET WAS AT LEAST 20 MIN AWAY. I ASKED ABOUT THE PUPPIES, BUT THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD HAVE DIED ABOUT 10 MIN AFTER SHE DID. THIS WAS YEARS AGO, BUT TELLING THE STORY STILL MAKES ME SOB! (AS I AM RIGHT NOW) MIKEY WAS A BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL DOG!!! HE WAS VERY LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH A LOVING OWNER!!! SOOOO MANY DOGS DON'T!!! PLEASE KNOW THAT MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU!!! AND MIKEY IS IN A WONDERFUL PLACE! ALSO, I TRULY BELIEVE YOU WILL SEE HIM AGAIN!!! IF YOU EVER NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO WRITE ME!!! YOU AND MIKEY ARE IN MY PRAYERS ALWAYS!!! GOD BLESS, J.
Mimi, So sorry to hear about your dog Mickey passing away. Hope you are okay and always remember the good times that you had with Mickey and how he made you happy. Take care, Maria
Mimi, I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mikey. Know that you did everything you could do. And know that he know how much you did try and how much you loved him. Barbara
my condolences on mikey....i know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet. T.
Mimi, I'm so sorry to hear about Mikey's passing...I lost my cat, Puff, about a year and a half ago, and another, Twink, a few years before that, and it's so sad. Don't blame yourself; when it's time for our pets to leave, it just is. We live and learn. I believe you'll be with him again someday. Until then, you'll always cherish the wonderful memories of the joy he gave to your life. L.
Mimi - I am very sorry to hear about your dog. My dog has been sick since he was a puppy and I eventually had to give him to someone that could watch him because I had to work and noone would take him anymore for daycare because he had an enlarged heart. It is still very painful for me. Patti
Hi Mimi, I was praying for Mikey yesterday especially and now I know why. I am sorry he is gone but I firmly believe that our pets do go to heaven......I will continue to pray for you and your family in the weeks and months ahead. I know how it feels to lose a dog; in fact, our Tango (big dog - lab and german-shorthaired pointer mix) is suffering now with a sarcoma that we treated once before and we also lost our Tipper (Jack Russell terrier) to a coyote attack in our own yard in October 2001) Pets give us such joy, that it's no wonder we have a hard time saying goodbye! I pray for God's peace and comfort for you.....Love, B in California
My heart goes out to you...being a pet owner I found myself in the same situation a few months ago....it is heartbreaking....I am so sorry . Sonnia.
Sorry to hear about Mikey Mimi, oh dear....May God be with you & your family during this difficult time. Best regards, Audrey
Hi Mimi. I'm so sorry to hear that it was Mikey's time to cross the Rainbow Bridge. He will be well greeted by all your pets that have gone before him no doubt he is watching over you right now. Your own special angel. Healing and Light to you. K.
Dear Mimi I was very, very sad to hear that you lost Mikey - had a husky named Jim and it took me 2 years getting over losing him - even now, 20 years on, I still miss the special symbiosis we had.... Best wishes, M.
Get the book will I See Fido In Heaven, read Revelation chapter 5 verse 13. I'm so sorry. I admire you for doing that, it is soo hard. Terri
Hi Mimi, I am very sorry about your loss of a family member your dog Mikey. I have 6 Shih Tzu's and I love all of them one the oldest Jager my boy is 15 this year and I dread the day he is no longer with us but with everything in this life at some point it does have to come to an end it always makes me feel happy though that I know what a great and loving life we have given Jager and I'm positive that your Mikey's was the same. Kindess Regards J.
I am so sorry about Mikey. I stood here in my kitchen reading your e-mail and cried. I am still crying. I know the feeling. I have been through it a few times and it is horrible. God Bless You and your family and I'm sure Mikey is in doggey heaven having a great time. Take care! Linda
that is sooo sad. - G.
Hi Mimi, As I have stated before - I love your e-mails. They have been inpirations of self restraint, self confidence, and loving yourself. Thank you!! My condolences on your dog... I can imagine this is a tough time for you. Take care, J.

Sorry to hear about Mikey, I know he will be greatly missed. D.
Dearest Mimi, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Mikey was gorgeous, he will never leave your side:-) You are in my prayers. Penny
Hi Mimi, how are you doing? I've been reading your emails for the past couple years and I love your advice! You seem to always make very reasonable decisions and that's what I try to do as well, so I like your emails a lot. I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry about Mikey. He was an absolutely beautiful dog and I'm sure you all loved having him for the past 7-8 years! That is a long time. I thought it was great that he was helped during this and I'm sure that he's resting in peace and comfort right now. Once again, thank you for all your emails. Take care, *~N.
I am so sorry to hear about Mikey.. :( I pray the rest of your pets are safe and healthy...This information that I have read has been sooo eye awakening. I just made a phone call to my friend..... and he did not answer..... I so won't be calling back until he calls me, and if he does not, oh well his loss..... I made a few mistakes in the beginning such as gift giving and emotional text messaging but not anymore.... So thanks again!! S.
I am so sorry about the loss you are going thru now. I lost my Kitten in Oct to Fip After spending a thousand dollars to try to help him. Go to the Rainbow Pet page it helped me alot... JS
Dear Mimi, I just wanted to say how sorry I am that you have lost Mikey. I know how hard it is as I lost my collie, J., nearly five years ago and I still miss her and the 14 years of companionship she gave me. A year ago I was finally ready to think about having another dog and now O. is in my life, a crazy young rescued collie. We are in the process of on-going training! I do wish you lots of love at this time and know that you have much support from all your correspondents. Thank you also for your wisdom and advice, it is incredible just how often that when I am feeling a little down about my failed relationships, the right message from you pops into my inbox! Much love Jan
Dear Mimi, It's so sad to learn about the passing away of Mikey. Please take it with good heart. Princess
I am so sorry to hear about mikey. No matter how much I'm sure you miss him his life wouldn't have been happy. At least he was happy being with you...knowing that should give you comfort and I'm sure you'll remember all the good times with him. Sending you warm (((HUGS)). Terri
Dear Mimi, I have never written to you, but I love your daily column. I just want to extend my condolences for your dog, Mikey. I know that kind of grief. My dog, Snickers, disappeared a month ago and I have exhausted every avenue to find her. I believe she was stolen. My grief is different, but not having our happy, tail-wagging friend to greet us after a hard day's work leaves a real void. Take care, A.
I am very sorry to hear about Mikey. I looked at his pictures you sent the other day and he looked like a very happy dog. I am enjoying your emails and thoughts - they have been very helpful to me. Lisa
Dear Mimi, I am so sorry. Losing someone that you love is extremely difficult, and I hope that you and your family are doing okay. Amy
Dear Mimi, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Mikey. When I was just out of h.s., I worked for a vet for a number of years. The passing of a pet was always tragic and the distress you would see on the part of the vet.'s staff is genuine. The early 1980's when parvo was new and no one quite knew what is was, was a very difficult time. We lost many puppies and elderly dogs. I could never just send a bill for the final treatment. I always sent a condolence note.
Three years ago, just after I threw out my cheating husband, I came home to find our dear Sabrina paralyzed in the back end and in terrible pain and fear. I took her to an animal ER and then drove 50 miles at midnight during an ice storm to [veterinary specialist] University. She was only four years old. With the kind, genuine and gentle guidance of the young staff, I too held Sabrina in my arms while she passed. She trusted me so much. Of course all I could do was the right thing, rather than the selfish thing- put her through a further ordeal with the same outcome. I am sure that you did right by Mikey too. I believe in a heaven where we are united with our loved ones- no matter how many feet they have. This may not be exact theological doctrine- but I'm not sure they have all the answers. Think of St. Francis. Sorry for your loss, M., faithful reader
Mimi, I'm so sorry about your puppy dog...I know how pets become family and they are there to love you when you need love the most...I have kitty cats that I love just as you love your dogs...I want you to know I very much enjoy your daily advice on the love realm... Take Care, Bessie Cherry
so sorry to hear about the passing of Mickey......he is in heaven running and playing with his friends. Chris
I don't know you, of course, but I'm sorry to hear about your dog. My 16-year-old cat has to be put down next week and it's a heartache that never goes away. I'm so sorry for you. Sandy
Hi Mimi: Sorry to hear about Mikey, my condolences. I really enjoy your emails thank you. All the best for the new year. Love and light, Raquel
I'm sorry about your dog Mikey. I lost my "little girl" last year, I went to lunch and came back 2 hours later and she was gone. I don't know what happened, she was only 3 yrs. My heart goes out to you and I know the sadness you feel. Paula
Mimi: I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so obvious you really love Mikey. God Bless Him and You. C.C.
Hi, Mimi - Oh my God... I am so sorry to hear about your Mikey. It absolutely grieves my heart as I so understand how it feels to lose a beloved "best friend"... not just a pet. All I can say is my heart goes out to you. As you know, time is the only healer here. Cherish your beautiful memories, and let that be the salve on your broken heart. Love, Cynthia
I am so sorry about Mikey. I love dogs. Thank you for the info. I did call my ex today but only to give myself closure. I had to say some things to him, I left the message on his phone. I was very calm and to the point, not sarcastic. I am over the anger. He called me back and left a message still trying to blame me. I texted him with facts and left it at that, still to the point. I feel better. I have closure. I don't intend on calling him again. I am taking your advice on that. Sometimes you have to let a person know that you are not a dummy or immature, but wise and aware of their antics.
Dear Mimi, I'm so sorry about your doggie. I had to put my little doggie down this past October. She had been my companion for 16 years. I feel your pain. They are such little darlings. I have been meaning to email you and let you know how much your emails have helped me, and also "The Women Men Adore"... - K
Dear Mimi, I'm so sorry to hear about Mikey. Losing a pet is so difficult. Right before Christmas I had to put my eldest kitty, Niki to sleep. She was about thirteen and half with a growing list of medical ailments which I now believe were just symptoms of her underlying condition. I'll never know if the cancer just went undetected through all her checkups or it was an aggressive type of cancer that spread rapidly but I pray everyday she wasn't suffering in silence. I miss her so much as I know you will miss Mikey. They are all unique little beings that love truly and openly. I'm not sure what your plans are for Mikey now but I have in the past bought urns for my kitties. This company sells some lovely things www.peturns.com if you are interested but you can always shop around. With my deepest sympathy, E.
dear mimi thank you so much for your helpful e mails, i love them, keep them coming, i was sad to hear about your dog passing and hope he is comfortable in doggie heaven. best wishes susie x
Mimi, Sorry about your dog. Hope you find another that u will love just the same. Tokido
Mimi, I send my condolences to you from Portland, Oregon. I hope that you progressively find solace in knowing that Mikey's spirit is surrounding you and helping you anyway it can. Warm wishes, Anne
I am sorry for the loss of your pet. Marianne Williamson says that when people (pets too) die, they aren't gone forever, they've just "taken another train" somewhere else... Susan
Sorry about losing your dog Mickey. I was really sad to learn that he's passed on. Take heart okay. Thanks
Hi Mimi, Sorry to hear about your dog passing away...Best Wishes Ramona ps. I love reading your emails....Keep up the good work...
Mimi, I am so sorry about Mikey. I know how devastating the loss of a beloved pet can be. (I had a cat for 21 yrs.) My heart goes out to you. My co-worker just lost her Golden, Bailey, suddenly after 7 yrs. She is in alot of pain, and I understand. May Mikey rest in peace. Peace, love and light to you. V.
Hi Mimi: I am really sorry to hear about Mikey. May God bless his soul. Regards, S.
Dear Mimi, I'm so sorry about your dog Mikey. I know that you've experienced a great loss. My scottish terrier had 6 puppies back in october and I just sold the last 2, but in the short time that I had them I was very sad to see them go, so you have had a great loss, but like I once heard somewhere that we have to think about the time that we had with them and dwell on it. GOD bless, Diana
Dear Mimi, I'm so sorry about Mikey. I had a husky-wolf dog for 11 years named Sitka. She was my baby girl. So much trouble people always said to get rid of her and of course that never crossed my mind. A gentle kind soul, but liked to run. She also got tumors inside her and I did not know for so long until her belly swelled up. I treated her daily with antibiotic shots and did not hesitate to have the tumor removed however when they openend her up, she was full of tumors and I never even got to say goodbye as they put her down right then and there. Those were the best 11 years of my life and I know how you will miss Mikey. No dog ever replaces them and you cherish the memories. I was so hoping there would be a different result for your Mikey and you would have more wonderful times with him. Thank you for your helpful emails, sometimes they come right in time. A.
Hi Mimi - I just wrote you condolences for Mikey and told you about my dog Sitka. I then opened the email with the pics and my Sitka had the same blue eyes....she was all white with those blue eyes. I cried looking at Mikey's pics and I know you went throuh the same trouble with Mikey but oh so worth it. I also had Sitka cremated and kept her ashes until I moved out of the house she lived in her whole life and also scattered them in the yard there. Mikey was beautiful. Take Care! A.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss....Mikey's pictures touched me...he was a beautiful dog....your pain can be soothed by knowing you did all you could to keep him comfortable through his darkest moments and nourished him with your love.... God Bless... A.
Dear Mimi, My heart absolutely goes out to you. I have 3 little, loving chihuahuas and love animals with all my heart. Losing your "baby" is devastating. I commend your courage in letting Mikey go, however, as that was the most generous, loving thing you could do for him. I too sat with my beloved "Rapture" (my long-haired mini dachshund) as she passed into the beyond. It was slightly shocking as it was so fast. It was major to be there till the very end and when your pain dissipates some you will be so glad that you were there with him. I am sure he knew that you were and how very much you love(d) him. Condolences and you are in my thoughts, M.
Hi Mimi, I am so sorry for Mikey... I can imagine what you must be going through. Our pets are always so special for us... To let you know you are in my thoughts and prayers, I am sending you an article. I hope it helps you. :-) "When Pets Die: Letting Go and Grieving for our Animal Friends"
Dear Mimi, I enjoy your insightful letters. I just want to say I am sorry for your loss. I have pets and I know the loss of a family member is painful. Since you are a pet lover, when the time is right, please think about all the animals in shelters waiting for someone to give them a home. You will be happy to make another dog happy and giving is such a great feeling. You will not be replacing Mickey because you cannot replace a pet the same way you cannot replace a person. I will make it easy for you to cope with your loss and Mikey will be happy too. Sincerely. Liliana
Dear Mimi, I look forward to your e-mails daily because they have gradually become part of my life! I'm a reader from Abuja, Nigeria, and I forward your mails to my friends here as well. I'd like to commiserate with you on the loss of Mikey, I actually saw his pic and I did pray he would get better. Death is inevitable and it was his time to move on. Thanks a lot for all your mails and keep them coming!! Regards, G.
I just wanted to tell you I'm holding Mikey in my thoughts -- our animal companions are such a huge part of our life and yet they never stay with us long enough ... Jacklynne
I am very sorry to hear about the passing of, Mikey, your beloved dog. I once had to part in the same way as you with my dog, but I found comfort in knowing that she (my dog Precious Pebbles) is now resting. I will say a little prayer for you. P.
Hi Mimi,
My...Mikey is gorgeous....those eyes are like my nine year old grandson. They look at you and you instantly melt. How can you be cross with anyone with those eyes :-)
From one of your avid followers,
N.
P.S. Have just read your book "Calling Men"...........THANK YOU!!!! From the bottom of my heart.
Mimi,
Firstly my condolences on the loss of Mikey - I understand the grief you must be feeling. I lost my Millwall almost a year ago and not a day goes by that I don't miss him terribly.
Many thanks for all the great tips. J.
Dear Mimi,
I am so sad to hear that Mikey had to be put down to rest. My thoughts are with you at this moment. Losing a pet must be an awful hard situation to overcome. You must be saddened with immense grief. You have so much love and support I hope this will help take away some of it.
He truly was a beautiful dog!

God bless your doggy Mikey.
Lots of luv to him & you

Dear Mimi,
I am really, really sad to learn about your dog, Mikey. Lost a dog 20 years ago and still miss him. Now have 2 cats (due to work load, can't have a dog) and one of them is called Mee, Meelafolle because she is folle, and Murphy, who is a normal cat.
It's really hard to lose a loved animal and most people who don't own - or perhaps do own and don't learn to know their animals - wouldn't understand.
Best wishes
D.
Mikey was also in a YouTube video my daughter made a while back! I'm working on getting a small clip of that one... it's funny.
This was taken on the back patio after he chewed up a lot of towels that he was supposed to have for sitting on. You can see his "kong" ball in the background - dogs like it when you fill those up with peanut butter. His medicines were hidden in that cheese goo stuff that comes in a spray can. He liked that.
Mikey was found about 80 miles from my home, near a lake. We were camping and he spent the night with us. We thought he was amazing.
He was being chained up on a short chain outside in his previous home, along with another dog. Long story short, he became our dog.
This is Mikey in the Doghouse I made for the dogs that they hardly ever go in.
Siberian Huskies have blue eyes and Mikey's are ice blue. Warning - "Sibes" are not the easiest dogs in the world to own. They shed mountains of hair and chew up everything... plan on learning about dog training... it's on my list of things to do... but of course we love Mikey. We have had him since summer of 2000.

Our other pets in case you want to know....
Harvey
This is Harvey, who was hit by a car, whom we found on the street in May of 2006. Readers sent me $1800 in help for his $3000 vet and surgery bill. He had 5 hours of surgery and the Doctor saved his leg!!
These is my oldest daughter and Harvey. Harvey is a wonderful dog. The vet said he's a Hound Dog. So I guess "He ain't nothin' but a Hound Dog." Wow, no one ever told me how great "hound dogs" are!!
Tiger, Our Cat
This is my cat Tiger, who is a dear companion, who has most certainly already had at least 4 lives. We found him under the playhouse in the back yard... started feeding him... he never went in the house for many years. Now he leaves the house less and less; he's here most of the time, and he is a big "Bio-Mat" fan too. (The fact that the cat sits on that so much of the time by choice tells me that it must really be for real. I sure hope so since I paid about $1600 for it.)
